Windows 365 is a new service that will let businesses, initially, to access Cloud PCs from anywhere. Virtualization and remote PC access has existed for a number of years but the new release of Windows 365 will allow users to stream a version of Windows 10 or Windows 11 in a web browser.
As the shift to remote working and learning grows, Windows 365 will allow users to access their cloud PC using any modern web browser or through Microsoft's remote desktop app. The company has also stated that every user's apps and settings will boot instantly from any device, allowing personalised Windows PCs to be accessed from anywhere.
There is no current news on when the service will be available for personal users but the new Windows 365 service for businesses will launch in August 2021.
Our Take
The backbone and architecture that will provide the new service already exists which will be using the Azure platform and virtualisation technology.
With the recent reliance on tools and services which have allowed employees and students to work remotely, this will provide huge advantages, primarily by providing a single workstation for users to access their apps and data.
Even through Windows 365 users will be provided with the latest software updates, one downside will be that the cost over time will be more than making a single purchase for a modern workstation with the latest version of Windows. This is something that individuals and businesses will need to determine, taking into account the time and cost involved in any ongoing maintenance and potential IT issues.
This type of service will be ideal for company employees who work outside of the office such as sales people who are increasingly demanding more remote facilities to access company files and data from locations outside of the office.
Organisations involved in teaching and students will also be increasingly using services such as Windows 365 in the coming years as the demand for remote based learning grows.
