Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook introduced Meta at Connect 2021, which will bring together their apps and technologies under one new company brand. The focus on Meta will be to bring together social networking in a metaverse or virtual reality environment.

The aim of the metaverse will be to create a hybrid of today’s online social experiences and expand it into three dimensions or project it into the physical world. Using some of the following products and services, Meta are aiming to revolutionise social networking as well as work, productivity, entertainment, gaming, learning and education.
Horizon Home
This is an early concept for a home base or hub which will act as a central area where you will access the metaverse.
Quest Headset
The Oculus Quest headset will be the primary hardware which will allow to view the various virtual environments within Meta or the metaverse.
Messenger calls in VR
Facebook recently launched Messenger support in VR which allows you to send a message using the Oculus Quest headset and will be developing further features that will allow you to make audio calls with contacts from any Messenger-enabled platform.
Quest Platform
The Quest Platform is the software and virtual environment used in conjunction with the Oculus Quest headset. It will be developed further to include the various environments that will operate within the metaverse.
Quest for Business
This will include a suite of features designed for businesses and will be designed to let you log in to your Quest headset with a Work Account. Upcoming features will include business-only login that will allow you to collaborate with co-workers and access apps such as Dropbox, Slack and Facebook itself.
Presence Platform
A suite of machine perception and AI capabilities that will include Passthrough, Spatial Anchors, and Scene Understanding. This will allow developers to build more realistic mixed reality, interaction, and voice experiences to be used within gaming, work, home and learning environments.
Our Take
The Facebook rebrand into a parent company Meta makes sense in a lot of ways when considering that the company focuses on the development of AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality) environments which will integrate and build on the social, messaging and VR services they currently provide such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Messenger, Instagram and Oculus.
As more of us move online and begin to do more remote working and learning, Facebook are aiming to be at the forefront of this change in habit and provide a single service for users when it comes to work, business, education, entertainment and gaming.
Just like Google did with search, Facebook, or now Meta are aiming to do the same when connecting to your online products and services and may become the single virtual environment that people will use when connecting to family, friends, teachers and work colleagues online.
