Web accessibility is the term used to describe the tools, standards and technologies which are used to assist disabled users when they use a website or web based app.

This ensures that as many users as possible can navigate, find and understand the content and services that are avalable on the internet but also be able to use the web based services which are offered by companies and organisations and allow disabled users to effectively contribute to the web.

The types of disabilities which can have an impact on a users access to web based content available on the internet can be:

  • Visual
  • Auditory
  • Cognitive
  • Speech
  • Neurological
  • Physical

Over the years, web accessibility has been progessively expanded to also include users without disabilities. This ranges from users having a slow internet connection, device with a small screen such as a mobile or tablet to those users who work within a limited environment and are unable to listen to audio.
